A nongovernmental organization operating under the aegis of Centre For Social Value and Early Childhood Development again took the campaign against female Genital mutilation (cutting of female clitoris with sharp objects) to communities in Cross River stressing that it was one of the worse evil that can be committed against any girl child.
In a training/ brainstorming session with journalists in Calabar, a community health expert with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital UCTH, Dr. Juliet Ubom stated that mutilation of the Genital parts of the girl child was an evil to mankind and called on government at all levels to formulate a policy frame work that can hold any one who severs the Genital organs of the girl child on the guise of preventing the girl child from becoming promiscuous are made to face whatever consequence which is followed with such offence.
She said it was barbaric and absurd for anyone to chop the Genital part of the girl child in the name of initiating the girl child into womanhood.
Speaking on the theme; “Voice out to save the girl child /amplify change” Ubom stressed that unless something is urgently done to by stakeholders in our communities to stem the tide, things are likely to go out of hand.
She called for all hands to be on deck so as to get the ugly trend reversed stressing that if stakeholders fail to put an end to the trend the society risk the chance of losing so many girls into the cool hands of death.
The community expert stated that 90% of girls who undergo female Genital mutilation end up falling sick and subsequently give up a ghost, due to infections which comes up with cutting of the clitoris with sharp and crude objects used to mutilate the girl’s Genitalia.
Ubom stated that with every hand put on deck, the ugly trend can be reversed without any hitch.
“I am of the opinion that if we intensify the campaign against this ugly trend, this evil can come to an end”. Ubom maintained.
The medical doctor enumerated problems associated with this menace to include, depression, pains by the victim which may lead to the victim being abandoned and can subsequently lead to suicide.
Other ills enumerated by the community health doctor includes, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, urinary tract infections and vesicle virgina fistula VVF which come after child birth.
She stressed that immediately the girl child gets mutilation of her genitals, the victim begins to experienced obstetric complications which leads to birth complications which results in cesarean session CS.
Other complications which the medical expert said can also occur as a result of genital mutilation includes episiotomy (cutting-off of the vagina during child birth), whi h may lead to damage of the baby’s brain due to lack of oxygen which the baby supposed to inhale during the process results to death as a result of prolong labour.
Other menace also enumerated by Dr. Ubom as a result of genital mutilation includes gynecological issues which may pushed the women to find it very difficult to conceived a baby through pregnancy due to painful sex as a result of difficulty in penetration adding that mutilation of the genitalia also results to menstruation issues which breeds diseases causing the woman to go depressed and subsequent abandonment by her spouse when the victim is infected with VVF as a result of stench which oozes out from the victims
“Other issues likely to come up with mutilation of the woman’s genitals includes, depression, as a result of abandonment and indeed suicide because when a woman becomes infected with VVF, the stench that oozes around the woman scares people away from her and indeed even her husband”. Ubom added.
In her remarks, president of Cesved, Mrs. Gift Abu, stated that the organization decided to embark on the campaign against the exercise because of the outcry made by young girls who are victims of traditions in the hands of their grandmothers who see it as a must to chop off a portion of their Virginia part of the girl child just because they want to be in tune societal norms and values.
